Artists Gallery- Encaustic Sampler Workshop
Martine Strohmeyer Instructor
Saturday May 9, 2009 10:00 AM-1:00PM
Class Fee $60.00 includes all materials, class size limited to ten students
En-caus-tic - 1. painted with wax colors fixed with heat. 2. a work of art produced by an encaustic process.
Mon-o-type - 1. a one of a kind print. 2. a print made without a repeatable matrix.

Come and explore the seductive media of Hot Wax. The Encaustic Monotype is an exciting, contemporary process with a painterly approach to printmaking. This process is experimental, freeing, and can be used successfully with a wide range of imagery and styles. Encaustic mixed Media is fun and experimental.

Encaustic paint is beautiful and durable. Made from beeswax, pigment and damar resin it offers endless possibilities for astonishing surface qualities. The layering process offers beautiful depth and transparency. The creative potential with this media are endless.

Monoprinting and fusing techniques is combined with contemporary approaches, such as collage, image transfer, and some traditional painting methods. Students will learn about the preparation of supports and grounds, and about the safe and archival uses of this medium.

You will create a variety of work on a variety of media. This is a great class for the experienced artist searching for a new way to express their vision and for the less experienced artist to have immediate success.

Encaustic Monotype Process
The encaustic monotype combines the ancient painting medium of encaustic with the popular monotype process. Encaustic sticks (beeswax and pigment in solid form) are used to draw on a heated metal plate. The wax melts instantly and it is manipulated with brushes and other tools. Paper is laid on the plate, the back of the paper is rubbed with a barren, and the image is transferred to the paper. Viscosity of the encaustic media is controlled by temperature.

This process provides new possibilities and advantages:
The encaustic becomes one with the paper; the wax will not crack. Encaustic works on paper are easy to handle, store, and ship. With encaustic monotypes, the results are immediate. The paint dries within seconds and it can be reworked anytime later.
No Prior Experience with monotypes or encaustic is required.
Work on paper, Xerox, photographs, canvas, linen, and other experimental surfaces. Prints may be mounted to foam core with PMA (positionable mounting adhesive) or framed as a print.
